Guide for Ladies: Money Can’t Buy you Class

Money Can’t Buy you Class

Many blogs put a lot of emphasis on the importance of luxury and designer goods. Even though sometimes unintentional, many fashion blogs and articles on how to be classy enhance the importance of wealth and expensive clothing in what it means to be classy.

However, money and designer brands have little to nothing to do with what it means to be classy, or elegant. It doesn’t matter if we talk about old money or new money, money can’t buy you class, period.

This should not be news to anyone; after all, all you need to do is to tune in to one of the “real housewives” series to study -how not to behave if you want to be classy and elegant-. And these women are considered rich, many dress well, and they are of course beautiful. But these things mean little when you see how they behave. I have honestly never met anyone who behaves like that, and I hope I will never have to.

Dressing well and elegantly can help to emphasize one’s elegance, of course. But if you could be classy simply by dressing a certain way, or having a specific amount of money on your bank account, then yes, life would be easier. You would only have to get what you want (assuming of course you would want money and expensive clothing) and you would have class.

Well, sorry to disappoint you but you will have to work harder than that to be considered elegant or classy. In order to be classy you will have to change your character rather than your exterior situation or appearance. I believe that education and intelligence are some key factors to being classy, as well as being humble, authentic, working on your self-worth, being kind, having manners, and things like these.

To have or show class is about having or reflecting high standards of personal behavior; admirably skillful and graceful.

In some way I think that people who are not willing to invest in having high standards of personal behavior want to create an illusion of having class by applying what is visually associated with class (a certain style of clothing, a certain brand, money and so on). This is a cheap way out as it is harder to behave accordingly than look the part.

One of my very first articles on this blog was actually about 5 keys to being classy, and if you read it you will find that not once did I ever mention that you need to be wealthy, or wear expensive clothing to be classy.

Do you believe that fashion blogs create an illusion of what you need to obtain to be classy? Do you believe that money is an important component in being classy?

  1. While I agree that money cannot buy any sort of character quality, many classy women end up doing well financially over the years because their self-discipline naturally extends to their asset management. I have known several people who did not think a person could be both wealthy and virtuous. As for fashion blogs, I have never read them with the intent to cultivate character or lifestyle choices as they seem, as a whole, to be too overtly faddish, commercialized, and superficial.

  3. As you said yourself, class is something you haven't been born with, like a silver spoon, you have to work hard on yourself and many people are just not willing to work hard on themselves therefore "Being Classy" is even more precious bc it's honestly rare nowadays if we look around the celebrities we are surrounded not to name any names. I work in the fashion industry and I love fashion but I just can't bare to read fashion blogs, I do read 2 or 3 but once a week only to keep me on my toes. I am more interested in books, art, movies, travelling, meeting new interesting people, bc this is how you distinguish yourself and your style, true classines comes within and this is how you discover beauty, the true one...that is Fashion to me, something that looks always good on you, that compliments you, your education, it's timeless. If I had to pick few sport or activities being the classiest, i would say Ballerinas, the way they work hard and dance it of "easy" on stage... and Tennis Players.

  4. THANK YOU for posting this! A friend and I recently were talking about how Valentino pumps and Chanel purses are all the craze and manifest this notion that you need these items to look chic. Not a fan. Though I come off partially materialistic, I actually think a solid education and being well-read is what gives you class. It gives you the capacity to develop a perspective and opinions. It's why I allude to my time at St. Andrews so much more and it is also why I focus on my writing on the blog as opposed to focusing solely on photos. So in conclusion, I believe you 100% (and more if that's possible). Have a lovely weekend, lady! xx
